Edison plant launched to provide renewable energy to IGAT INDUSTRIA GAS TECNICI - SIAD Group
The 10 MW photovoltaic plant was built in the province of Alessandria and will be able to integrate the energy needs of the industrial plant of IGAT, a company of the SIAD Group, in Pignataro Maggiore (Caserta) with green energy and avoid the emission into the atmosphere of more than 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year1
Milan, 29 May 2024 - IGAT Industria Gas Tecnici S.p.A, a SIAD Group company active in the industrial and medical technical gas sector, and Edison Energia, an Edison Group company active in the sale of electricity and gas to major industrial and tertiary companies throughout Italy and value-added services to the retail segment, announce the entry into operation of the photovoltaic plant under a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The agreement covers the production and collection of all the green electricity produced by the 10 MW plant in the province of Alessandria, in order to meet part of the energy demand of the IGAT plant in Pignataro Maggiore, in the province of Caserta.
The photovoltaic plant, which went into operation in March, will have an average yearly output of around 14,000 MWh and will avoid the annual emission ofmore than 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere1.
IGAT, Industria Gas Tecnici S.p.A. was established in 1991 and has been a member of the SIAD Group since 2020. It is one of the most important cryogenic gas production centres in central and southern Italy, and is strategically located to reach the main industrial sites, which is why it has constantly expanded its production capacity to meet the needs of large customers.
Bernardo Sestini, Chairman and CEO of the SIAD Group, declared: “With this agreement with Edison, we confirm our mission to ensure responsible and sustainable growth for the entire SIAD Group. It represents a further step forward in maintaining and consolidating our goals of buying certified electricity from renewable sources. We are firmly convinced of the importance of this path, which reflects the fundamental value of sustainability in guiding all our activities on a daily basis.”
“First of all, I would like to emphasize the company's projects related to sustainability and environmental protection,” says the CEO of IGAT Massimo Iorio: “They have become a significant goal for our company, completely in line with the ‘vision’ of the parent company SIAD. Electricity is a fundamental resource for IGAT, and the opportunity to sign a contract with Edison Energia for the supply of green energy from photovoltaic systems immediately aroused considerable interest, and activities to this end have been underway since 2020. The landmark we have reached today represents the first step towards an even broader project, always aimed at protecting and safeguarding the environment, and allows us to consolidate our successful ten-year partnership with a reliable and professional partner such as Edison. For companies such as IGAT, clean energy can bring a dual advantage, both in economic terms and in terms of sustainability,” concludes Iorio, “and we are therefore confident that in the very near future we will be able to accomplish the further ventures we intend to pursue, in order to achieve tangible results aimed at an ever more incisive protection of the environment.”
Since the liberalization of the markets, Edison Energia has been the market leader in the supply of electricity and natural gas to businesses. To support the energy transition, the company provides multi-year supplies and accompanies industries in the process of electrifying consumption through long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) from renewable source plants. This ten-year agreement envisages the construction and operational management of the plant by Edison Energia and the collection by IGAT of all the renewable energy produced, which in this way can increase the green generation in its portfolio in line with national and European decarbonization targets.
“The innovative agreement with IGAT - SIAD Group represents a new milestone for Edison Energia, which is committed to supporting customers in the process of decarbonizing consumption.” Said Massimo Quaglini, CEO of Edison Energia. “We want to be a reliable partner that accompanies the industrial customer on a virtuous path, encouraging sustainable consumption choices with reduced environmental impact. The agreement stems from the experience acquired over the years by Edison Energia as a leading national operator with industrial companies, which we make available to our customers every day together with the Group's assets.”
1 Total avoided emissions are equal to the product of electricity savings and the emission coefficient of the Italian thermoelectric park as defined in ISPRA environmental reports (year 2021).
SIAD
SIAD is one of Italy's leading chemical groups, with a 2023 turnover of more than 1 billion euros, 70,000 customers and 2,278 employees worldwide. Founded in Bergamo in 1927, chaired and administered by Bernardo Sestini, it has a strong tradition and experience. The SIAD Group has operations in Europe and around the world and is active in the Industrial Gas, Engineering, Healthcare, Natural Gas and LPG sectors. Since its foundation, values such as Solidity, Innovation, Authenticity and Difference have enabled the SIAD Group to grow, continuing to expand year after year in a responsible and sustainable way.
IGAT – SIAD Group
IGAT - Industria Gas Tecnici S.p.A. was established in January 1991 with the aim of building a modern production center for the needs of customers in Central/Southern Italy. The plant, built between 1992 and 1995, was constructed by SIAD Macchine Impianti (a SIAD Group company); it is based on a process of physical separation, by cryogenic means, of the three main components of air (nitrogen, oxygen and argon). It remotely operates its own “oxygen gas” production plant installed at a qualified steelworks in Southern Italy. Since 2020 IGAT has become a full member of the SIAD Group. Among the projects in the pipeline is the production of “Green Hydrogen” powered by a photovoltaic system.
Edison
Edison is a leading energy company, with 140 years of history and records that make it the oldest operator in the sector in Europe.
