Our History: From values to the future

Nearly 100 years of history

SIAD has been one of the key players in Italy’s economic development ever since its foundation on May 3, 1927.

Since then, the Group has gone through almost a century of innovation, growth and transformation.

1927
The Patent for the Porous Mass: the invention of Quirino and Bernardo Sestini

The very creation of SIAD is closely linked to one of the most important innovations in the industry: the patent for the monolithic porous mass (nos. 254063 and 256501), filed on February 17, 1927 by Quirino and Bernardo Sestini.

This patent revolutionized the safe transport of acetylene cylinders, solving a problem that had until then limited industrial use of this gas due to explosion risks.

The SIAD porous mass was adopted not only in the cylinders produced by the company, but also by other manufacturers and even by the Italian Navy, which used it to power the lighthouses along the country’s coasts.

Not only chemistry: the Group’s two great passions

From the very beginning, SIAD combined gas production with a division dedicated to manufacturing containers, compressors and air separation units.

This dual nature – chemical and mechanical – became the DNA of the Group. In 1953, the Engineering division evolved into SIAD Macchine Impianti (SMI), which still today represents Italian excellence in the design and construction of plants and technologies for the industrial gases sector.

Production expansion and new technologies

During the years of Italy’s economic boom, SIAD played a leading role through major technological investments, such as the acquisition of the first plant capable of quintupling oxygen production capacity.

The company also stood out for its production of rare and specialty gases, its ISO 9001 certified quality, and its ability to anticipate market needs, thanks to a corporate culture that values talent and internal training.

Internationalization

In the 1990s, SIAD began a profound transformation into a multinational Group, driven by strategic investments in Eastern Europe and new partnerships.

The agreement with Praxair strengthened SIAD’s position among the European leaders of the industry, thanks to technological and commercial synergies that enhanced its presence both in the Italian and international markets.

In 1989, SIAD Austria was founded, marking the first step towards international expansion. In 1990, SIAD acquired 49% of Istragas (now Istrabenz Plini), strengthening its presence in Central and Eastern Europe.

During these years, Medigas was established — a company specialized in home healthcare services — which would become a benchmark in Italy for home medical solutions.

Strengthening production and new horizons

The new millennium saw SIAD achieve major production growth and significant geographic expansion.

SIAD opened one of the most modern plants for industrial gas production in Central Europe, in the Czech Republic and Romania, strengthening production capacity and logistics coverage in strategic Eastern European markets.
The Group also expanded its presence in Asia with the establishment of SIAD Engineering in Hangzhou, bringing Italian know-how to the heart of the Chinese market.

Research, innovation and international development

In recent years, SIAD has accelerated its commitment to research, sustainability and innovation, further enhancing its global footprint.

The Group is investing in the creation of a center of excellence for research and the development of new gas applications, the “Gases of Life District”.

SIAD is developing new technologies for hydrogen compression, contributing to the energy transition and sustainable mobility.

International expansion continues with the creation of SIAD Americas, strengthening the Group’s presence in the American continent and opening new growth opportunities.

The Founders

The history of SIAD is shaped by people, passion and values: dedication, innovation, customer focus and social responsibility.

Family leadership, now in its fourth generation, has successfully transformed SIAD into a solid, dynamic Group with a clear forward looking vision.

Quirino and Bernardo Sestini

Quirino Sestini
Founder and first President of SIAD, Quirino Sestini was a brilliant chemist and academic, known for his relentless scientific curiosity and his ability to turn research into industrial innovation. In 1927, together with his son Bernardo, he patented the monolithic porous mass that revolutionized the safety of acetylene cylinders, laying the foundations for the creation and success of the Group. His vision and focus on solving practical industrial challenges profoundly shaped SIAD’s corporate culture.

Bernardo Sestini
Son of Quirino, Bernardo Sestini led SIAD with a pioneering spirit and a strong openness to innovation. A chemistry graduate with a passion for mechanics, he combined technical expertise with entrepreneurial vision, guiding the Group as it expanded and diversified its Engineering offering. Under his presidency, SIAD successfully navigated the postwar years, investing in new technologies and reinforcing customer centric values that still define the Group today.
